Magazine design and art direction for one of the biggest UK publishing houses
After moving on to launch Squark Design, I was invited back to Bauer Media as a freelance consultant and designer, supporting various teams during periods of staff transition, deadlines or creative overflow. The challenge was often to seamlessly slot into existing teams, quickly get up to speed with editorial tone and brand identity, and ensure the high standards of design were consistently upheld.
I worked across multiple high-profile titles, including CAR, Country Walking, Trail, Top Santé, and Match, delivering everything from feature layout design and editorial illustration to advertising concepts and promotional content. My familiarity with Bauer’s internal systems, combined with a deep understanding of editorial storytelling, meant I was often a go-to freelancer for short-notice work or tight deadlines.
Whether adapting an existing visual style or injecting fresh ideas into a brand’s aesthetic, I was trusted to keep the momentum going, ensuring issues hit the press on time, and always to a high standard.
