Brand development and experience for Britain’s well-known model train manufacturer

THE PROBLEM

Hornby, the iconic model railway brand, reached out after being personally recommended to Squark Design. Their members area, an offering designed to reward and engage loyal fans, wasn’t living up to its potential. The materials being delivered to their valued community lacked the quality and impact expected from a brand with Hornby’s legacy.

They were keen to elevate the entire experience and create something special—something their passionate customer base would be proud to be part of.

THE SOLUTION

We began by completely overhauling the branding and identity of the members’ magazine, introducing a more compelling, refined look and feel that matched Hornby’s stature while adding modern energy and excitement.

Once the new visual direction was in place, the magazine itself was given a full redesign. Layouts were reworked to be more readable and engaging, imagery and typography were updated, and editorial content was given the space to shine.

But the transformation didn’t stop at the magazine. We also created:

– Loyalty badges and branded stationery for members

– A gatefold advertising campaign to promote the new offering

– Event stand designs that aligned with the refreshed identity

The project culminated in a more unified, elevated brand experience for Hornby’s community, both in print and in person.

THE RESULTS

Hornby were thrilled with the transformation and the enthusiastic feedback from their members. What began as a redesign project quickly evolved into an extended partnership. After the initial relaunch, I was invited to stay on to continue producing several issues of the magazine to ensure the new standards were embedded.

Once the in-house team was ready to take over, the project was handed back with a strong foundation in place.

This collaboration with Hornby showcased how thoughtful design can reinvigorate customer loyalty, enhance brand perception, and add long-term value to a legacy brand.
